Spanish born soprano Lucrezia Bori, a leading diva of opera's golden age, died in New York at 72 from a brain hemorrhage. She had been in a coma at Roosevelt Hospital since May 3, after a long Metropolitan Opera career from 1912 to 1915 and 1921 to 1936.
Several hundred members of the Florida Chapter of the National Assn. of Postmasters converge on Sarasota for a four day convention ending Tuesday with a banquet at the Lido Biltmore Club. George M. Moore will speak on Monday after arriving from Washington. Events include Miss Special Delivery contest, stamp exhibit, tours, a boat cruise to Happyland, and a closing banquet with postmaster Jess Davis as toastmaster.
United Press International reports a wave of cross burnings late Friday and early Saturday across Birmingham and nearby towns with about 30 fires in white and Negro areas. No arrests. In Tennessee cities, stores briefly banned Negroes, police and court actions followed, and integration debates continued as federal and local officials moved on school and civil rights issues.
Frank Sinatra argued with John Wayne over Albert Maltz and the Hollywood Ten then fought parking lot attendants. Officer reporting said attendant Edward Moran, about 21, said Sinatra struck him in the lot and Moran was treated for a bruised ear.
Fire at the Figure Health and Beauty Studio on 4107 S. Trail destroyed outside equipment and housing over it. Officials say faulty wiring caused the blaze early Saturday morning. Proprietor Chuck Moore planned the open house for Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.
New York AP reports 10-year-old Joey Alfidi conducted and played piano in a Carnegie Hall recital. He led Beethoven Fifth with a 60-piece orchestra, performed Mozart D minor concerto, and premiered his own Rondo Brilliante. The prodigy shared the stage with Lewis Calvit guiding Brahms and Prokofieff pieces.
Dr. Leo Jenkins, inaug president of East Carolina College, spoke to about 10,000 Friday when he suddenly found his address meaningless as one of his six children swiped page 8 from the text.
Fidel Castro charged eight days of Cuban coast guard actions against a U S submarine and accused U S warships of blackouts near Cuban waters. He cited nine sightings of U S ships May 6 to 11 and named the Norfolk Barracuda The Sullivans and other vessels. He noted Guantanamo Bay status and urged Washington to explain the downing of an American plane in Cuba.
Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev arrived in Paris aboard an IL18 turboprop sounding hopeful about progress at the upcoming summit. He warned of influential circles rekindling the cold war and focused on Germany Berlin disarmament and East West relations while avoiding direct US references. Secretary Herter and President Eisenhower were noted as targets of his earlier critiques though he appeared restrained on arrival.
Former President Herbert Hoover, in a CBS interview taped at his Key Largo home, says little will come from the upcoming summit but meetings can clarify issues. He comments on morals, the presidency, education, Soviet science, his first job as an underground miner, and the president's need to fish for privacy.
Commerce Advisory Council members meeting with Secretary Mueller voiced concern over rising competition from lower-cost foreign goods. Ralph Cordiner of GE said some executives are bleeding costwise, while officials urged a shift to realistic quotas and stronger exports to improve the trade balance. The group predicted continued activity into mid-1961 with growth slowing in 1961.
