Joe Hanis a 44 year old Union Pacific section hand was frightened by a snake hiss and fell onto tracks. He was struck by a freight train suffering internal injuries multiple broken ribs and severe head lacerations.
Rioting across Singapore intensifies with thousands of troops deployed after a bus strike demonstration. American journalist Gene Symonds dies from head injuries while at least 36 others are hurt. British forces guard bases and schools for military families were closed amid clashes linked to union protests and a Hock Lee Bus Co dispute.
Louis E. Wolfson and Montgomery Ward and Co dispute control of the $721 million company. Wolfson concedes he cannot win the chair this year and expects two of three seats on the nine member board, with the showdown revealing each side's strength among stockholders.
Admiral Lewis L. Strauss chairman of the U S Atomic Energy Commission and his wife arrived by plane today from Paris. They will depart Monday for Lisbon en route home after a three week Western Europe tour.
