Smathers led with 422,986 votes from 1,111 precincts to 56,047 for Erle L. Griffis. Attorney General Richard Ervin and Secretary of State R A Gray won new cabinet terms. Justices T Frank Hobson and Stephen O Connell were renominated to the Supreme Court with Ervin leading Pruitt 320,870 to 80,114 and Gray with 309,559 to Hornsby 72,521.
Israeli Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett reported a renewed outbreak of violence along Israel's frontiers with Egypt and Jordan. Incidents since Sunday included mining of two Israeli military vehicles, Egyptian border crossings, Arab infiltrations from the Gaza Strip, cross border fire into Jerusalem's Israeli quarter, and an explosion damaging a house near the Jordan border.
