President Kennedy praised Alan B. Shepard for the successful space flight and urged Americans to let the triumph spur renewed effort in the space program. He issued the statement from Washington, noting the achievement as a national incentive.
United Press International compares Russia's Yuri Gagarin flight with America's first space exercise. Gagarin orbited Earth in 89.1 minutes aboard Vostok 1 reaching 109 to 187 miles altitude at 18000 mph, while Shepard's capsule merely reached 115 miles high and 290 miles out with about 15 minutes flight time at 4500 mph. Kennedy praised the historic milestone and urged rapid progress in the U S space program while extending condolences to Shepard’s family.
A retrospective on Project Mercury traces the 20 months from the first primitive Mercury capsule flight on September 9 1959 near Antigua to the development of an improved capsule for a planned orbital mission. It notes heat shield progress and the shift from suborbital to full orbital plans under NASA.
