County challenges land claim over submerged Longboat Key lands

Sarasota County filed an answer and counter claim against St Armands Lido Realty Corp alleging misrepresentation of facts in a 1953 submerged land sale. Midwest Storms Sweep Eastward In Severe Winter System

The Associated Press reports a savage weekend storm sweeping from the Midwest to the Northeast with high winds up to 85 mph, heavy snow, and tornadoes killing three in Arkansas. Trains stranded in Wisconsin faced 12 foot drifts, while crews freed the last carriages after long delays. Civil War Vet General John Salling Dies At 112

KINGSPORT Tennessee veteran John Salling aged 112 died of pneumonia at Munal clinic. Survived by daughter Mrs Hugh McCamy and grandson H E Hawkins, he was one of the last two Civil War veterans. Funeral plans described, with burial in Slant Virginia.

Eisenhower to address Berlin crisis on national TV radio

President Eisenhower will speak tonight from the White House at 9 30 p m EST in a half hour address carried by major networks. He will charge the Soviets with trying to remove Allied forces from Berlin and may display occupation documents to support his position. He is expected to reiterate a firm stand on Berlin and oppose atomic war while restating American policy. Senator Mansfield suggested outlining general negotiation terms the West would consider in Berlin talks.

Florida officials counter California migration claims with statistics showing more Floridians moving to the Sunshine State. Fiery Yacht Explosion Forces Six Rescues Off Florida Coast

In Fort Lauderdale a 44 foot motor cruiser named Nancy Marie VII exploded during a Sunday outing. Six people were rescued. Richard Dunham, 28, was hospitalized for arm chest and face burns. Skipper Joel Wingate, 58, said the blast came from the engine room amidships.

Lobo de Mar Cutter Wins Yacht Contest in Havana

The 67 foot Lobo de Mar cutter won the 26th St. Petersburg to Havana yacht race finishing in 45 hours 54 minutes 50 seconds. Of 32 starters none of the other boats was within sight as she reached Havana harbor.

Best Ever County Fair Officially Opens At 7

The Sarasota County Fair opens at 7 p.m. with a helicopter arrival by Glenn Potter and Dallas Dort to inaugurate a week of exhibits across livestock poultry vegetables and arts. The curtain rising marks the start of daily shows until midnight with prize money over 4000 and a Riverview High School band concert followed by fireworks and acts on opening night.

Body In Lake Recovered After Drowning on Lake George

The body of Dr. George Thomas Fergus Jr. a 36 year old dental surgeon from Marietta Georgia was found floating in rain swollen Lake George. Police continued search for Dr Edward S Marks 40 who is missing after a small fishing boat with three aboard capsized on the lake Thursday.
