Fred Berger Sarasota properties manager of Arvida Realty Corp resigns effective March 15 and plans to return to the St. Petersburg Beach office. Berger, 56, has led Arvida's Bird Key development since 1959 and stated he is stepping down from the post.
Berger resumes his brokerage work with Arvida Realty Co and Arvida Oil Co after a month’s vacation at St. Petersburg Beach. He plans to acquire 40 to 50 gas station sites, backs Bird Key development, and notes Ringling holdings purchase by Arvida was delegated by Milton Weir to pursue premier west coast sites.
CAPE CANAVERAL AP I A three stage Thor Able rocket lifted at 8 02 a m and fired toward a sun orbit with 25 000 mph speed and a 90 pound aluminum satellite. Signals from the satellite were received at tracking stations worldwide and Jodrell Bank scientists said the craft was on course toward Venus.
Officials announced Pioneer V achieved escape velocity and entered solar orbit after Jodrell Bank released the third rocket stage and later disabled the satellite transmitter. The 90 pound probe, launched near the A18 missile pad, aims for Venus and may remain out of earth range except for Jodrell Bank as it travels several months toward the planet.
In Rabat, two Moroccan men were pulled from Agadir wreckage 12 days after the quake, raising total rescues to 12 from a disaster that has left over 4,000 bodies recovered. Officials fear at least 6,000 remain buried under February 29 ruins. Rescue teams from multiple nations persist despite slim hopes.
Snow and ice blanketed the Midwest and South as another late winter storm swept in from the western plains. The Army National Guard and Red Cross aided more than 500 marooned families in northwest North Carolina while snow depths reached up to 35 feet in four counties from prior storms. With ice and freezing rain across Oklahoma Arkansas Kentucky and Tennessee travel remained dangerous and schools closed as fatalities rose to at least 32. Cold air from the Midwest threatened Florida as well.

Red Cross rescue workers rush to supply 500 families trapped in mountain homes as a new snowstorm hits the Western North Carolina counties of Watauga Avery and Alleghany. Government and National Guard resources aid helicopter landings and field kitchen operations while residents mark needs in the snow with simple codes.
Dr. Helmut Landsberg, chief of the Weather Bureau Office of Climatology, says the U S climate is warming based on a study of 25 year periods. He notes a rise of eight tenths of a degree in average annual temperature between 1906 1930 and 1931 1955 and says the trend could move the country about 240 miles south if it continues. World wide warming is part of the same pattern with no downward trend detected.
An Indian official apologized for the arrest of American actor Fredric March his actress wife Florence Eldridge and two friends on a prohibition charge in South India. The Transport Ministry said the incident was unfortunate and hoped the U.S. Congress would accept the apology. Four ounces of liquor were found.
William J. Riley, 42, Sarasota County Civil Defense director, announced his Republican candidacy for sheriff. A New Yorker by birth, he moved to Sarasota in 1945 after Air Force service and spent a decade with the Sarasota Police Department plus extensive FBI and Florida Police Academy training. He is married to Anna Catherine Hughes and has a son, Billy.
Parker, a Sarasota banker and founder of the National Bank of Sarasota, declares a Republican bid for the Sarasota County Public Hospital Board. A New York native, 56, he brings banking, investment and real estate experience and serves as National Bank of Sarasota chairman and Public Housing Authority commissioner. He lives at 894 Freeling Dr. and helped establish the local bank with civic leaders.
Mrs Eleanor Roosevelt will speak on the value of education to a free society at a reception and dinner sponsored by the Democratic Committee at the Holiday Inn in SaraSeta. She flies in for the talk and to visit her uncle David Gray of White Gulf Lane Siesta Key. A press conference precedes the program with State Sen Ed H Price Jr of Bradenton introducing her. High ranking Democratic officials from both counties will attend the 7 15 p m buffet with a 6 30 p m reception. The event is led by Leonard Bureh chairman with James Howze William Grimes and Sen Price. The Plaza Restaurant serving Sarasete 31 Years.
Logan West Virginia AP reports the attempt to reach 18 trapped miners via a side tunnel failed due to excessive slate. State mines director Crawford L. Wilson said the only route now is the main passageway where heat and a stubborn fire persist. Pumps kept water flowing into the fire area as the rescue entered its fourth day with no clear word on the miners status.
