Sarasota celebrated the Best Pageant Ever with a Saturday Grand Parade led by Jaycee President W Robertson and Chairman Glenn Rise. About 125 spectators watched as committees delivered smooth operation and festive pageantry during a week of Sarasota’s pageant season.

A U S Air Force C54 transport carrying 14 people crashed in clouded Formosa mountains near Taitung. Planes spotted the wreckage with no signs of survivors. Rescue parties head to the scene as investigators note the craft failed to maintain altitude after requesting a higher setting.
Police pursued a 27 year old Lititz man Kenneth Shelly as he sped 42 miles on the Turnpike in the wrong direction up to 100 mph. The crash at a roadblock ended the chase and Shelly died two hours later without giving a reason for fleeing.

Mrs. Frida Hexter known as Princess Naja died after a cobra bite during a Baltimore night club act. The 25 year old insisted on finishing her performance despite paralysis of her respiratory tract. She had a history of snake bites and kept several reptiles at home with her husband.
The swelling Ohio River has displaced hundreds of families from homes along its banks and is rising higher than expected. By last night 2,400 people in 603 families had been evacuated and more than 35 roads were closed as water encroaches from Pomeroy to Louisville. Catlettsburg faces 800 of its 4,700 residents likely to flee as the river crests there tomorrow.
PAHOA Hawaii the threat of violent new volcanic outbursts hung over eastern Hawaii Island. Earthquakes diminished yet jolted the area along the 20 mile slope from Kilauea crater to Puna fields. Volcanologist Gordon A MacDonald said Pahoa villagers packed and ready to run if a big eruption bursts forth noting danger may persist for days or weeks.
In Birmingham, Cecil Padgett the surprise witness who linked Albert Fuller and Arch Ferrell to the A. L. Patterson murder was recalled for further cross examination. Defense focus on Padgett aims to challenge the state's eyewitness based account in Fuller's trial.

A large atomic blast designated Big Shot rose on the Nevada Test Site at Yucca Flat atop a 500 foot tower. The flash lit Las Vegas and was visible from Los Angeles and San Francisco as a mushroom cloud formed and a shock wave rattled windows for miles. About 90 aircraft participated in the detonation in this Nevada Test Range weapon test.

The forecast shows considerable cloudiness in the north and central areas this afternoon with isolated brief showers, otherwise partly cloudy through Tuesday. Temperatures range from about 35 to 55 degrees, with cooler conditions in the north and central regions. Marine outlook from Jacksonville to the Straits and East Gulf calls for moderate to fresh northerly winds, shifting to northerly in central portions, with Tuesday bringing more cloudiness and a 73 degree high.
