Terre Haute Indiana AP reports twenty two miners died in a coal shaft explosion Thursday night. Their torn and burned bodies were recovered after a dangerous ten hour operation by masked workers. The mine general manager said the cause is unknown and an investigation will begin tomorrow morning.
President Kennedy called for a renewed spirit of adventure to protect water power forests and wildlife and urged private citizens to aid government in resource protection. He praised the National Wildlife Federation for mobilizing private efforts to develop wildlife and preserve open spaces.
