The new Longboat Key Anna Maria Bridge opened with an official ceremony after two years of work and a 20 year dream. Pageant funds created to save Sarasota event

The Sarasota Junior Chamber of Commerce launched the Save Pageant fund to cover a deficit from the 1958 Sarasota Pageant after a rain ruined the parade and attendance lagged. Jaycee leaders Wally Lawrence and Neil Alrey opened Pageant Escrow Funds in three banks, receiving about 150 dollars by 11 a.m. and hinting at more to keep the 1959 pageant alive as costs run around 5,000 dollars.
