Edwards Air Force Base officials fear a U2 trainer is down in the desert after failing to return from a routine mission. The aircraft had fuel to last about until 10 16 p m and was last heard from near Edwards California.
Burma defense chief Gen. Ne Win seized power in a bloodless coup as the army took control of Rangoon. Prime Minister U Nu and cabinet were reportedly arrested and Parliament suspended while troops secured key points and blocked roads. Flights were canceled and officials sought calm.

He demanded Englewood Assistant Defense Director Robert F Scott resign, a move Scott refused, triggering a power dispute over firing authority under Florida law Chapter 252. Col William Kuhn would be acting director with the council delaying a permanent appointment while a committee investigates the issue.
In Reno Nevada AP report Rev Edward Fliger of St Pauls Methodist objected to a spouse swap ceremony after uniting a California pair. Carson City Justice Pete Supera performed the other swap.
