The House appropriations committee cut 16.5 million from Postmaster General Summerfield request, approving 133 million of 149.5 million sought for fiscal 1958. They warn against repetition of 1957 cuts and endorse selective Saturday deliveries and other savings.
Williamsp ort police say Christina Wennerstrom 16 and Huw Williams 18 were stopped on US 15 near Montoursville for 65 mph in a 50 mph zone. The couple reportedly married in West Virginia and honeymooned in Canada before returning toward Washington. Christina’s father Col Stig Wennerstrom has returned to Sweden on official business.
Sleeping sickness has broken out in Sarasota County affecting horses and humans. The notice notes a Sarasota outbreak and references a fuller report on page 11. The piece also mentions Vic Damone's career comeback and beach erosion visible in photographs on page 11.
Lightning struck Ft Bragg during a late evening storm killing two National Guardsmen from the 30th Division and wounding others. 8000 Tar Heel guardsmen were bivouacked west of the base, with field aid stations treating 48 patients for several hours. None of the injuries were serious and troops aided one another, earning praise from an Army spokesman and unit chaplain Maj David Wilkinson of Charlotte.
In a playful note, Minnie Mermaid jokes about condemning clouds over Sarasota as forecast calls for partly cloudy skies with scattered showers. Highs near 87 to 91, lows around 70 to 75, with gentle southeast winds and minimal rainfall.
Don McLeod director of the Florida Sheriffs Bureau told the 44th annual Florida Sheriffs Assn. convention at the Lido Beach club that the bureau will establish a state crime laboratory after receiving a legislative appropriation of 534000. He said the bureau will grow into a key statewide coordinating agency with a 28000-criminal file and 106 cases aided in 37 counties resulting in 102 arrests. The conference opened with a 45 sheriffs present and expected record turnout later.
Sheriff John M. Spottswood of Monroe County and Florida Sheriffs Assn. president defended the Florida Sheriffs Bureau against Sen. Joe Bill Rood who likened it to Gestapo. The bureau, Spottswood said, will prove to be a progressive step in law enforcement. The bureau has no arrest powers and supports local self government, operating to keep authority with local officials. Don McLeod declined to comment.
State Road Board member Al Rogero told a 100 strong audience the SRB would cooperate with Trail property owners on widening from Stickney Point Road to Venice but would force its plan if talks failed. He said work would start in four months and the area from Stickney Point Road to 4 700 feet north would be a municipal section with storm sewers and a smaller medial strip due to nearby businesses.
