Premier Gamal Abdel Nasser raised Egypts flag over the Suez Canal zone in Port Said with a 21 gun salute as the last British troops left after 73 years of occupation. Soviet official Dmitri Shepilov visited nearby while a national holiday was declared and a parade of Soviet arms was planned in Cairo and Alexandria.

In Lima vote returns, former President Manuel Prado leads Fernando Belaunde with 41 231 to 38 206 while Hernando Lavalle trails at 13 840. About 1.5 million Peruvians were eligible, with women voting for the first time and Aprista support possibly widening Prado’s edge. Prado signals possible reintegration for the outlawed Aprista party.

Florida Attorney General Richard W. Ervin proposed an advisory commission to seek lawful solutions to racial problems and settlements. He outlined four legislative steps including extending school assignment law, a 10th Amendment interposition, gubernatorial emergency powers, and a referendum to block forced desegregation with possible public grants to offset disadvantages.
Vice President Nixon, after a visit with President Eisenhower at Walter Reed Hospital, said there was no discussion of Eisenhower's political future. He added Eisenhower will decide when to speak, and Deputy Dulles was present for part of the talks as Eisenhower weighs his health.
