Southern opponents debate delaying or forcing a rapid test on the civil rights amendment as debate nears conclusion. Backed by the administration, the measure would let the attorney general seek federal injunctions for rights violations and spark fights over jury trials in contempt cases.
AFL CIO President George Meany told a Senate labor subcommittee that Congress must pass comprehensive legislation to curb corruption in more than 20 billion dollars of employee pension and welfare funds. A train struck a truck carrying 18 Mexican field workers west of Vroman Colorado killing 12 people including the driver Sylvester Licano of Rocky Ford. The bodies and body parts lay along the railroad right of way for 380 feet at a farm road crossing one quarter mile west of Vroman. The eastbound Santa Fe freight caused the disaster.
