Cost Hurdles for Tampa Miami Toll Road Feared

The Florida State Turnpike Authority said high right of way costs between Bradenton and Venice and limited traffic make the 60 mile Tampa to Venice corridor unfeasible. Chairman John M. Hemmer noted possible alignments were studied but a $19 million bond would be needed for construction and right of way. Another study examined a route from Bradenton toward Punta Gorda.

Jail Rule Is Upheld In Juvenile Detention Case

Circuit Court Judge Robert Hensley ruled the Sarasota County juvenile court may detain a juvenile in county jail pending a hearing. This marks the first local challenge to the detention authority in juvenile matters. The decision followed a writ of habeas corpus filed after arguments.

Red Cross Awards Lifesaving Certificates in Venice

Ten individuals received Red Cross senior and junior lifesaving certificates in Venice. Carolyn Fox Macdean Poynter Ward Melody Wendt led by director Miss Loita Johnson and instructor Robert Mallett. Lessons began June 18 with two hour sessions three times weekly under Mrs Ross Durant supervision. Durant to attend Red Cross Aquatic School in Brevard North Carolina for 10 days starting August 24.

Venice Opposes Intracoastal Canal Route Plan

Venice residents voiced firm opposition to the C-1 alternate intracoastal route at a Friday night public hearing. City officials including Mayor Smyth Brohard and Council members heard from Kirkwood Tischler and local dignitaries as crowds pressed for city action and voter input on the canal proposal.

Storms Sweep M' East Toll From Twisters Reported

A string of tornadoes hit Michigan and Florida with eyewitness accounts of a car lifted over 80 feet into a tree near Britton Michigan killing a mother Patricia Reed 34 a son Francis 10 and a niece. Another child survived injured as others were found near wreckage while a trailer and house were damaged. A separate tornado damaged six houses and utility lines at Fort Pierce Florida.

CAPE CANAVERAL CAPE Canaveral U S officials postpone the Mariner 1 space lab launch to Venus by about two hours after an errant radio signal in the Atlas Agena booster. Scientists call the issue minor and expect quick clearance as the two hour window for launch passes.

Water Project Assured Venice Council To OK Plant Loan

City officials indicate Friday that a 566000 loan for water plant expansion and distribution extension will be accepted at Tuesday's meeting. The council will likely authorize Russell and Axon of Daytona Beach to finalize plans and specifications for the project. The firm prepared the feasibility study and preliminary designs. City and water board officials expect a 30 percent rate increase to repay the loan.

A Montgomery newspaper reporter and an aide to the attorney general faced trespassing charges over an alleged visit to Governor Patterson’s farm. Warrants were sworn Friday before Probate Judge Adams, the 1059th speaker of the House appointed by Patterson.

Eastern Air Lines aims to sign enough Flight Engineers International Association members by Tuesday to restart operations. A company spokesman could not confirm how many engineers have agreed to return and accept training to qualify as pilots and flight engineers after union talks collapsed.
