Sarasota hosts the 1957 Miss Florida Pageant with 21 entrants touring Main Street in convertibles for a preview. Finalists will compete Friday through Sunday at Municipal Auditorium with talent, gowns, and swimwear segments plus a Miss Florida crown and possible Miss America berth.
Leona Gage, 21, from Glen Burnie Maryland and cousin Barbara financed a $45 gown to enter Miss Maryland and win Miss U S A. The tall 5 foot 9H winner 118 pounds with 36 23 36 measurements will compete in Miss Universe. Elisabeth Sheffield Parr Adams McGirr were followers in final ranking. Leona quit school after father died and now focuses on pageant life.
Capt Ed Rickenbacker christened the new Eastern Airlines link to Mexico City with a rollout from New York and Mexico City. The move follows 1946 talks and a summer agreement enabling southward service. 68 passenger DC Bs begin daily trips next Tuesday, 8 hours total including a stop. The case centers on the July 4 1954 killing of Mrs Sheppard with conflicting statements from Wedler about the attack. A lie detector test is planned as authorities question discrepancies between Wedler’s account and Cleveland police findings.

Manatee county school officials and state Division of Community Colleges leaders met in Bradenton to discuss three sites for a proposed joint Manatee Sarasota junior college. No site decision was expected. final site choice rests with the State Board of Education. Sites: Bayshore Gardens 80 acres, Smokey Smith tract 50 acres west of Oneco, and H J Kohl 50 acres south of Cortez Road.
