President Eisenhower said he does not intend to send federal troops into the South to enforce school integration. He noted that the current civil rights bill before the Senate would grant such powers, addressing Southern fears that the measure could force integration on states.
A large scale layoff of between 1500 and 2000 craftsmen in Sarasota Manatee County looms as cement shortages hit area projects. Union leaders warn the payroll could vanish weekly, with plumbers among those working only three to four hours daily and a stop order on new work until the strike ends.
Sarasota prepares for 21 Miss Florida contestants arriving to register at the Sarasota Terrace Hotel. Judges will allocate 25 percent to talent, 25 percent to bathing suit appearance, 26 percent to evening gowns, and 25 percent to personality. Rounds run Friday to Sunday with winner advancing to Miss America in Atlantic City and earning about 8 750 dollars in prizes.

In Livermore California six women members repainted a drab wall of the Livermore Art Association building after president Dr James Paul Wesley a theoretical physicist criticized the scene and resigned. Ray Gighofer assisted with the repainting but the women restored the desert mural to its original look.
Police seek two teenagers after a 16 year old was slashed on the North Tamiami Trail near the Community House. The youth said a light green car halted at 7 p.m. two attackers with sheath knives exited, one cut his left arm and the other pinned him and cut his abdomen. He escaped to Youth Center for first aid. The assailants were described as about 16 or 17 with duck-tail haircuts. The father says three or four boys, including two from Tennessee, may be involved.
The Sunshine Skyway tolls may be cut after revenue topped expectations. Ralph Potts says passenger car tolls at 1.75 dollars have run 70 percent above initial estimates. Governor Collins asked Potts to review the bond provisions to see who can adjust tolls. Potts notes $3,995,000 of the $21,250,000 bond has been redeemed and another $892,000 may be redeemed on September 1.
Bob Allison a CBS correspondent testified amid cross examination that Clinton on Friday night faced a lynching mood after 12 Negroes were admitted to the high school. He covered riots and the beating of Rev. Paul Turner who escorted six Negro students to school.
The eighth explosion in the Nevada test series, planned for dawn today, is postponed 24 hours to Thursday at 6 30 a.m. PDT. The AEC cited operational and technical difficulties. The device will be fired from a balloon 500 feet above Yucca Flat desert.
Thomas Melham a South Dakota native now living in Milwaukee succeeds Gerald Crary of Deadwood as Imperial Potentate at the Shrine's 83rd annual convention in Minneapolis.
James R. Hoffa testified he did not know Cheasty worked for the Senate Rackets Committee until after his March 13 arrest. Prosecutors cited Hoffa's payment of $2,000 on March 12 for Cheasty's role as co counsel in the investigation of union wrongdoing. Hoffa denied prior knowledge of Cheasty’s committee job and said he hired him as a lawyer on the recommendation of Hyman Fischbach.
An extensive air sea and ground search failed to find any trace of a U S Air Force C47 missing with 16 military personnel aboard. Radio contact was broken Tuesday night near the journey ending in Taipei from Clark Field in the Philippines. US headquarters in Taipei said there was no substantiation of Chinese police reports of a crash on Mt Chiaopeng.
Sarasota forecasts show partly cloudy skies through Thursday with scattered thundershowers and high temperatures near 90 to 97. The Miss Florida contestants loom large, while local winds shift to fresh and variable in storms as readings report 87 degrees at 9:30 a.m. and no rainfall in the last two hours.
