The Associated Press notes a sharp rise in national traffic fatalities during the 102 hour holiday period ending after the Fourth of July. Officials report 133 traffic deaths, 87 drownings, and 24 miscellaneous accidents, totaling 244 accidental deaths as safety experts warn of an alarming spurt on crowded highways.
A film star Judy Tyler 24 and her groom Gregory Lafayette 24 died in a head on crash near Laramie Wyoming. Donald D Jones 23 Hanna Wyoming also died while Miss Tyler had just wrapped Jailhouse Rock with Elvis Presley.

Lakeland’s Leonora Hendrick won cowgirl division top prize. Arcadia residents Mary E Brown and Richard Carlton won flag race. Crowd swelled with Sarasotans visiting for July Fourth. weather mostly fair with late rain.
Eastern Airlines executive vice president M. M. Jack Frost flew to Sarasota to discuss extending service with local business and civic leaders. He met at the Plaza luncheon with Fred L. MacDonald and others, noting his WWI Army Air Base command in Sarasota.
In Cameron Louisiana Senator Russell Long charged the Weather Bureau was 12 hours off on its prediction before Hurricane Audrey hit. He toured ravaged Cameron Parish where about 700 people died in the hurricane and its 20 foot tidal waves. Long said the bureau did not tell people to evacuate the previous afternoon.
Sarasota area Boy Scouts depart from North Tamiami Trail for Valley Forge Pennsylvania to attend the fourth national Jamboree. The 37 boys with three Sunny Land Council officials journey by bus, planning stops at caverns and natural attractions en route. They will join 16 international groups, camp on a 2033 acre site, with activities and exchanges lasting through July 18.
Voters outside municipalities will decide if the Sarasota-Fruitville drainage district, born in 1923 to reclaim farm lands, should be absorbed by county government.
