Washington AP reports the United States has built up a large arsenal of new and improved nuclear weapons and begun retiring older models as the Atomic Energy Commission discloses. Unpoliced tests still pose a latent threat to the broader program.
A broad warm air mass from Mexico eased a ten day cold siege across the central United States. Subzero readings were posted only in parts of the Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York and Maine. Pacific weather brought rain to the West, snow and ice to the Rockies, and flurries near the Great Lakes. The AEC warned further nuclear advances remain possible and urged restraint, citing potential Soviet underground tests and the need for international controls to halt weapons testing.
Aesoriated Press reports a highly trained chimpanzee is set for a test flight 115 miles up and 290 miles out to sea to study brain function and reflexes during zero gravity. The experiment aims to gauge whether mental processes and reaction times remain stable during early spaceflight as humans may follow in later missions.

A Cuban military court is to sentence six American suspects for crimes against Fidel Castro's regime. The four man tribunal at La Cabana Fortress Prison tried them for aiding rebel guerrillas after sailing from a Florida yacht with arms. Court defense attorneys seek acquittal or deportation while observers expect guilty verdicts and possible prison or deportation outcomes.
A CBS cancelled a live hour long drama about Soviet espionage in the United States called The Spy Next Door. Armstrong Cork Co. executive Max Banzhaf said CBS pulled the production to align with the Kennedy administration’s push for a softer stance toward Russia.
The Coast Guard renewed its search for Mario Sosa, an Air Force airman third class and Uruguayan native, who embarked on a 30 minute pleasure flight from Marathon Key in a Cessna rented from Marathon Aviation. Four helicopters, planes, and a cutter were deployed before darkness halted the operation. Sosa, 25, had departed from J Connally Air Force Base in Waco, Texas, several months earlier. his 1960 model car remained at the base.
The United States maintains a ban on public interviews with the two RB47 fliers, Capt. John R. McKone and Capt. Freeman Olmstead, after their Barents Sea shootdown and Russian captivity. White House spokesman Pierre Salinger says the State Department ordered the delay in the interest of U S Soviet relations and a new de briefing procedure is needed before any interviews. The fliers have returned to Topeka Kansas with their families and no de briefing was deemed necessary.
London AP reports the Soviet Union resumed jamming Voice of America broadcasts to the USSR after 24 hours without interference.
