Washington AP reports major action this week in both chambers on a postal rate increase adding a penny to mail costs. The measure would boost postal revenue about 550 million, with an administration backed amendment lifting to 621 million.

Fire gutted the 45 year old Barbara Worth Hotel in El Centro and surrounding business offices. The blaze started in the basement and forced evacuation of at least 100 guests. Loss was tentatively over 1 million dollars.
Police clashed with antigovernment demonstrators in Tehran breaking up meetings in the bazaar area. Protesters shouted pro Mossadegh slogans while banners supported the National Front. Mossadegh, once prime minister and oil nationalizer, remains a rallying point and is confined to his home village west of Tehran after campus riots at Tehran University.
President Kennedy presents an optimistic 1962 economic program asking Congress to ease recessions. He projects output to reach 570 billion dollars, with a 600 billion target for noninflationary growth and 4 percent unemployment delayed to 1963. He seeks tax cuts, expanded public works, and payroll tax increases to fund expansion.
