Snowstorm Hammers Midwest Then Heads East Toward Coast

A massive Midwest blizzard dumped heavy snow and paralyzed Kansas City with up to 15 inches of snow and six foot drifts. Death tolls rose across Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa and Indiana as the storm moved east bringing warnings for New England and the Northeast.

Explosion Rocks Niagara Falls Rail Yard Injures Dozens

A tank car filled with a chemical exploded near the northeast city line, injuring scores and damaging homes. Hospitals reported many emergency cases but no deaths. The blast shattered windows at Hyde Park Elementary and disrupted utilities.

Indiana Senator Homer E. Capehart, a noted authority on banking and business, will speak at a non partisan public luncheon hosted by THE NEWS. The event at Colony Restaurant on St Armands Key begins at 12 30 p m with reservations via the Colony. Capehart, former chairman of the Senate Banking and Currency Committee and current ranking Republican on that panel, will appear during his annual Sarasota visit alongside other leaders in government and business. He also serves on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the Government Operations Committee.

Brig Guard Receives Two Year Sentence in Japan

Marine Sgt. Adrian A. McLane 23 of Philadelphia was sentenced to two years at hard labor for cruelty to Navy brig inmates at Sasebo Japan. He was reduced in rank to private and dishonorably discharged with forfeiture of pay. He faced nine counts of cruelty and one of simple assault for bayonet wound and multiple punches. The court martial convicted him yesterday.

Weatherman Woes and Nursery Rhyme Parody

Sarasota forecast notes a clear to partly cloudy period through Thursday with cooler readings. Highs around 56 to 64 degrees, lows 35 to 42, winds northwest to north. East Gulf sees similar winds with gentle to moderate conditions and partly cloudy skies.

Sarasota meteorologist Holis Bacon forecasts cooler mornings for tomorrow and Friday with clearing skies. Low temperatures should dip to 39 to 42 degrees, with highs of 68 tomorrow and about 70 Friday. Bacon cautioned he won’t forecast beyond a two day window due to unsettled north pattern.

Erosion Claims Delay Siesta Beach Improvement Plan

County Commissioner James D. Neville told visiting erosion expert Dr. Per Braun that beach erosion halts Siesta Beach improvements. He cited the Siesta Key beach, Mid Night Pass, Point of Rocks south area, and areas south of the Venice jetties as the main erosion sites while Braun noted Sarasota County faces wave and current actions at passes into bays.

Police Seek 10 Deviates In 1955 Case

Chicago police sought ten men in a sex ring linked to the unsolved murders of three northwest side boys. Thomas Burns, 19, was arrested after a 13 year old accused him of an attempted assault in Caldwell Woods. Burns said he and ten men had indecent acts in forest preserves over five years.

President Eisenhower asked Congress for supplemental 1958 appropriations totaling 2.896 billion dollars, largely for the Commodity Credit Corp. The White House said the sums fit the next fiscal year's budget and would not raise 1958 expenditures or new obligational authority for 1959.
