A foreign pursuit aircraft, resembling a P47 Thunderbolt, machine gunned central San Jose then was shot down by Civil Guard fire. The attack, claimed by Costa Rica as direct from Nicaragua, followed clashes with rebels near Villa Quesada as government forces moved to clear the area.
A Sarasota meeting led by State Rep Henry Bartholomew will review toll relief for Keys residents and toll plans for bridges connecting Lido and Siesta Keys with the mainland. Proposals include widening SR 72 to improve access to Myakka River State Park and linking Sarasota with Tampa via a four lane corridor, plus a new Manatee River bridge. The talks come amid a $7 million bond program for new bridge projects and road improvements on Tamiami Trail.

Joseph W. Martin Jr. minority leader of the U S House will speak at the Lincoln Day dinner in Sarasota on February 12. James Wood of the GOP Finance Committee announced the event. Martin, a North AttleboroMass newspaper publisher, served as Speaker and was elected to Congress in 1925. He is among the best known GOP leaders.
Fort Lauderdale voters chose J Herbert Burke in a special election to fill the Sixth Florida District seat after the death of Dwight Rogers. The contest was held yesterday to succeed the late Rogers and seated the winner in the state legislative body.
In Racine Wisconsin a stack of religious books was stolen from St John’s Church. Pastor Father Joseph J Maceki told police he is not worried and said if the thief reads the books he will return them.
Lt. Gen. Charlies E. Hart, commander of the US Army Lth Corps in Europe, said the 280 mm gun and Honest John rocket, both capable of carrying atomic warheads, give American forces in Germany added firepower. He stressed that decisions to use atomic weapons rest with the U.S. government and noted the gun’s long range and accuracy for large projectiles.
Crews widened the South Trail area road work cut telephone service disrupting fire reporting. Nearest working lines are on Siesta Key and Bee Ridge Road with sheriff and Civil Defense alerted. Fire Department will cover serious fires but cannot fight outside city limits.
The 78 year old Aga Khan, resting from gout, denies naming Prince Aly Khan to succeed him. He calls rumors about inheritance while he lives absolutely disgusting. Aly Khan had suggested his two marriages and romance would not block a future leadership of the Ismaili Muslims.
President Eisenhower said he has formed no personal judgment on the Wolf Lady case and that Harold E. Stassen must accept full responsibility for any outcome of his government service. Stassen was hired by the FDA after being dismissed by the State Department as a security risk.
A resolution condemns removing Memorial Oak trees planted to honor World War I veterans. The city accepted maintenance and protection of the oaks. A nominating committee led by J. E. Scaff proposes officers Gordon Parks president L. W. Lutz VP Mrs. F. A. Swabhel secretary and Mrs. E. A. Burt treasurer. Next meeting Feb 8 at 4009 Red Rock Lane.
New York wholesale prices measured by the Dun & Bradstreet index rose to $6.81 this week from $6.75, while last year’s figure was $7.03. Gains occurred in flour rye barley beef tea cocoa beans peas eggs potatoes steers and lambs with declines in wheat corn oats hams lard butter coffee cottonseed oil and hogs.
Rep. Chet Holifield announced he will push a concurrent resolution in Congress to cancel the Dixon Yates contract. He said action is needed before February 15 when the AEC or the Dixon Yates partners may exit without penalty. The deal would fund a West Memphis Arkansas plant to supply power to TVA replacing energy used by AEC.
Fifteen persons believed killed in a mid air collision southwest of Cincinnati near Burlington Kentucky. One plane was a Trans World Airlines passenger flight bound for Dayton and Cleveland. The other was a DC3 believed carrying two people. Survivors uncertain. witnesses reported bodies over a 200 yard area. TWA crew listed Captain J W Quinn co pilot R Childress and hostess Miss Pat Stermer.
A Douglas DC3 with serial N-999-B, carrying Pilot Arthur Slim Werkhaven of Sturgis and Co-Pilot Edward Agner of Battle Creek, took off from Battle Creek Michigan. The formation was reported via telephone to the Battle Creek airport.
