In Tallahassee on the eve of Farris Bryant’s inauguration a portrait of outgoing Gov LeRoy Collins was unveiled in the cabinet room. The gift from top officials features Collins among symbols of Florida and the six year record. Darby Collins, 10, helped unveil as reporters and well wishers observed.
In a rare House move, Democrats consider removing bolted members from a key committee after the November split. Indications point to enacting Kennedy promises on education, housing, distressed areas, wage increase, and perhaps elderly medical care under Social Security next year. The House 262 175 and Senate shakeup under new leaders, with Senate framework led by Mike Mansfield and Don Johnson succeeding Lyndon B. Johnson. Theodore Francis Green of Rhode Island retired from the Senate.
U S forces in the Pacific go on military alert amid Lao fighting and diplomacy. In Vientiane the pro Western government says Xieng Khouang has been recaptured while Pathet Lao claims fierce fighting at Phong Saly. Khrushchev warns of wider war as Macmillan and France seek united action under Geneva terms.

In Brussels mounted police charged rioters marching toward parliament as thousands disrupted Antwerp and other cities. Rioters smashed windows and attacked transit as demonstrations spread during protests against a government austerity program. Police used armor and fences to halt the unrest.
Moscow reports Premier Khrushchev offered renewed Soviet willingness to improve U S Soviet relations and urged an international conference to resolve the Laos issue. He accused the United States of aggressive actions toward Laos and the Congo while denying Cuban rocket base claims.
Fidel Castro announced a reduction of the U.S. Embassy staff in Havana to 11 by Wednesday night as tensions with Washington rise. He accused the United States of directing counter-revolutionaries and said the staff would match Cuba’s Washington Embassy, prompting a chorus of pro-Castro crowds outside. Charge d affaires Daniel Braddock received the notice on television at the embassy.
UPI survey places Florida weekend toll at 18 with 12 traffic fatalities, five drownings, and one air crash death. The latest victim is 13 year old John William Reid of Fort Lauderdale, killed when a car overturned on U S 441 near Exile Glade, with two other youths injured.
United Press International reports that New Year weekend traffic deaths neared last year’s record with 327 road fatalities, 40 in California and 28 in Texas. The National Safety Council noted the toll would likely fall short of the prior record of 370 deaths, while some states like Alaska and Hawaii reported no traffic deaths. The 1961 holiday toll remained below the 485 Christmas holiday figure.
Police found three year old Patricia McKiernan near her mother's body in a New York apartment. The child had starved for six days after being confined to a bedroom with no food or water. The widow mother Jennie McKiernan died reportedly after heart trouble. the brother in law prompted the investigation after not reaching her for two days.
