Lexington reports Ladenburger, a University of Kentucky student, was flown to Miami in an elaborate prank by Kappa Sigma pledges. He learned of the gag upon arrival and was welcomed back by Miami members, who financed his return. In Lexington he claimed the trip was coercive and involved threats of humiliation if he refused.
Israeli troops attacked Syrian outposts overlooking the Sea of Galilee injuring 55 Syrian soldiers and capturing 29 in a fog shrouded operation. Twelve Israeli soldiers were wounded as four outposts were blown up and withdrawn. U N observers rushed to the scene as the frontline action subsided.
Paris reports a split among middle of the road anti Communist parties ahead of the January 2 general elections. The division risks weakening anti Reds coalitions and may boost Communist seats after last election when they lost 67. A record voter turnout and about 5,000 candidates were expected for the 627 seats.
Fifty seven German prisoners of war freed by the Soviet Union arrived in West Berlin, the first group to reach Western territory in two months. The returnees are part of a larger group reported by ADN to have reached the Soviet zone over the weekend, as Moscow had promised 9,626 releases to Chancellor Adenauer and earlier stated 600 would reach the West German border tomorrow.

Reductions in the Soviet armed forces totaled 640,000 men, Moscow radio reported, completing a promise made in August.
