The president of the local NAACP chapter, Herbert Johnson 60, and commander of the Schulenburg Negro American Legion Post, was found beaten and burned on his farm 20 miles west of Schulenburg Texas. Sheriff L C McGinty said motive is unknown and Johnson appeared struck on the head and burned with his automobile. He had some money with him but amount and motive undetermined.
The Associated Press reports Mitchell joined the AFL-CIO New York convention urging unions to speak up in political matters. Meany and Reuther praised Eisenhower's address while noting plans to intensify political activity. Stassen warned the move could threaten workers and national welfare.
Tallahassee Leon County Circuit Judge Hugh Taylor refused to answer Collins eligibility to seek re election, ruling no controversy exists since Collins has not announced his candidacy. The challenge by Peaslee Streets of Lake Park was dismissed as premature and the law sets a later candidate announcement deadline. The judge noted Collins may announce later but the court will act only if he actually runs.
Conklyn Meriwether, 37, faces a second murder charge after his father-in-law Charles Mills, 55, died from skull fractures in a Miami hospital. Meriwether is accused of killing his crippled mother-in-law Ellen Mills, 49, at the Mills home in Tavernier. Mills and his son Paul, 16, were struck. the boy is recovering. Mrs. Meriwether fled with three children as the attack began November 20. Meriwether is jailed in Key West.
Federal authorities rejected Gov. Stratton's bid for a federal probe into Emmett Till's kidnapping in Mississippi. Attorney General Herbert Brownell Jr said no federal offense was shown, noting the crime involved private individuals and occurred within Mississippi. The request followed a LeFlore County grand jury's refusal to indict two white men on kidnapping charges after their earlier acquittal for murder.
Coast to coast air alert tests U S and Canadian defenses against mass attack. Operation Crackerjack organized by Air Defense Command in Colorado Springs ends at 7 06 a m EST. Units from U S Air Force Reserve Guard Navy Marines Canadian forces and 400 000 ground observers participated.
