Tropical storm Edith moves west northwest toward the Caribbean with winds up to 50 mph. Officials warn it could reach hurricane force late Tuesday afternoon. A hurricane watch is in effect from Antigua to Barbados as the system nears Dominica and Martinique.
Sarasota city commissioners unanimously approve Captain Francis Scott as police chief on a six month probationary term. The vote follows debate over charter power and calls for a charter review and potential changes to increase public input. City Manager Kenneth Thompson recommended Scott with limited detail, while Turner Hayes and Mayor Dennis weighed the charter implications.
Road Supervisor John Grout pitched an aerial survey to pinpoint major ditches and open drainage eastward as a joint county and developer project. An 8,000 foot mountain slid down threatening the Madison River dam and imperiling about 150 campers. Paramedics and helicopters were dispatched as observers reported lake shores dropped and the dam area was disrupted by the tremors.
A 12 story Gulf front hotel will start in 30 days on three acres at Lido Beach. The 116 foot tower will have 60 rooms with balconies water views and air conditioning. The project is led by Martin Nadelman in partnership with Howard Singer and Elizabeth Waters with West and Waters.

Robert Smith, 30, of 1345 5th St., was arrested on breaking and entering charges after Savoy Bar at 9th and Central was entered around 5 a.m. A roll of pennies and 11 bottles of whisky valued at $27 were taken. whisky not recovered. Smith is held in city jail in lieu of bond.
State Auditor Bryan Willis released a three year audit criticizing hospital financial operations. Board chair Lota Mundy said the report reflects growth and that faults have been addressed for three years. Willis noted poor cash control, lack of budgeting, bad debt provisions, weak internal controls, and improper handling of indigent hospital payments.
