Car Hits Train At 27th Street Crossing Injures Mother Of Seven
The 1952 four door car driven by Thelma Odom was demolished after colliding with an ACL freight train at the 27th Street crossing near U S 301. Odom, a Dixie Linen presser, is in Memorial Hospital with a fractured pelvis and scalp laceration. Police say the crossing lacks warnings aside from signs and the train crew reported a speed of about 25 mph at impact. Neighbors helped lift the car and provide first aid under Sgt. Charles Legg guidance as Odom remained conscious.

A. R. Patterson of Arlington Virginia finished a 50 day 1000 mile cardboard boat trip along the Intracoastal Waterway from Washington to Jacksonville. The 150 foot craft with a 10 horsepower outboard endured hits on logs and snags, requiring repairs using nearly 10 gallons of rubber cement.
