A 160 acre parcel south of Venice near U S Highway 41 faces rezoning to mobile home park. Florida lawmakers clash over reapportionment plans in special session

Aid to Dependent Children Aid Cut Sparks Welfare Debate

Florida's ADC caseload dropped from 27,753 in July 1959 to 23,873 in June 1961 after a 1959 law barred payments to unsuitable homes. Welfare investigators found 77 percent of 17,999 inspected homes failed suitability tests, including 1,103 white and 11,435 non white households. The department warns reduced aid may not save money and could harm the state.

Planners Weigh Pinecraft Bulkhead Line Proposal

The Sarasota County planning commission will study a bulkhead line for the Pinecraft area of Phillippi Creek from the intracoastal waterway to Sarasota Bay. Proposed widths include 400 feet from waterway to U S 41 Bridge, 200 feet above the Bee Ridge Road section, 150 feet from Bee Ridge to Tuttle Avenue Bridge, and 200 feet from Hyde Park Street north to Bahia Vista Street.

Twister damages shed at J. H. Tucker property

A small wind twister ripped through a boat shed in Fruitville along McIntosh Road and twisted the roof off the shed at 4466 Fruitville Rd on the J. H. Tucker property.

Hurricane Hunters Eye Squall in Caribbean Waters

Navy hurricane hunter planes were deployed from San Juan Puerto Rico to investigate an easterly wave of squalls detected by the Weather Bureau. Gusts reached 40 mph near the Virgin Islands with movement westward at about 15 mph.

City Court Aims at Drunk Driving in Sarasota

In municipal court here two motorists lost driving privileges on intoxication charges. Ward Brass had license revoked for three months and fined 125 dollars. James Cutrone faced a one year revocation with a 150 dollar fine suspended. Other fines included Betty Poseman 35 dollars, Roy Witt 20 dollars, Victor Hill 25 dollars, Reed Rambo 20 dollars with 10 suspended, Remo Loyal 15 dollars, and Harvey Foxworthy 50 dollars. Public intoxication fines applied to Harris and Gratch.

Garbage Pickup Rates Offered in Sara sota County

County commissioners study new garbage pickup proposals from two franchise collectors. R. J. Decker proposes biweekly pickups for a 20 gallon can plus five bushels of trash at 2.50 dollars per month. L. T. Barton offers the Englewood area a 2.75 dollar monthly rate for the same service.
