THE NEWS reports nearly 1,000 entries judged in the first Little Fooler crossword contest. No winner found by noon today, with final verdict and the next puzzle to be announced in Saturday’s Weekend Edition. The top prize is $10 if a winner is named, or $20 if not.
Nationalist warships shelled the Chinese mainland near the Matsus and destroyed artillery positions. The navy said over 100 shells hit targets including Huangchi docks, starting fires and returning safely. Communications named Capt. Liu as directing the operation amid regional tension.
In Tallahassee supporters of a full-length pike proposal defeated an amendment on Beach spur measures. The vote stood four to fourteen, reflecting a contentious decision on local infrastructure.
Dr. H S Hannis on Porter Road reports a radioactive ore discovery at his Palmer Farms ranch with samples to be lab tested in Tampa or Polk County. Drill contractor George W Hobbs notes ore about five feet deep and two feet thick with tests to determine uranium thorium or lithium content. This is Sarasota County’s first such find and Florida’s among a few.
The two major parties outlined manifestos for the May 26 elections. Eden’s Conservatives promise robust defense and a path toward disarmament with Russia while expanding property ownership. Labour under Attlee targets Formosa neutrality, halts to H bomb tests, early Russia talks, lower living costs, and greater nationalization to widen the welfare state.
Giovanni Gronchi a left wing Christian Democrat and president of the Chamber of Deputies was elected president of Italy for a seven year term by a 658 to 70 vote on the fourth parliamentary ballot. The election was praised across political lines.
The Senate approved a 636880 dollar appropriation to build 13 National Guard armories including a 123000 dollar facility on Fruitville Road near the county fairgrounds in Sarasota. Capt Andrew Dunkle said construction would occur within a two year window starting July 1 with federal funds already allocated and state funds to match. Other Armory sites include Palatka Cocoa Fort Pierce and Lake Wales.
Gunfire erupted between Louisville and Nashville workers and pickets at DeCoursey Yards near Covington Kentucky injuring four men. The strike against Southern Bell Telephone Co by CIO Communications Workers of America enters its 47th day as negotiators meet in Washington with company and union reps but fail to reach a settlement.
Florida children inoculated with Salk vaccine last week show no polio infection say Dr. L L Parks. Cutter Laboratories vaccine halted after 10 treated children contracted polio. Lilly made vaccine used for schoolchildren. California reports 12 post inoculation polio cases, total 17 nationwide among treated children.
Premier Ngo Dinh Diem asserts control in the Saigon area amid fighting with the Binh Xuyen faction. Reports say thousands homeless as clashes persist near Cho Lon and near the U S Embassy. Bao Dai orders shifts in military leadership and calls Diem to discuss his future.
Coldest weather remained in the Rockies with a 25 degree low at West Yellowstone Montana. The warmest spots were in southern Texas and southern Florida with 78 degrees in Laredo. Early precipitation appeared only in New England and the Pacific Northwest.
Health officials in Washington discuss a voluntary program to distribute Salk polio vaccine through commercial channels. By August 1 enough vaccine should inoculate most under ten, with the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis securing first priority for nine million children in public, parochial, and private schools. Preschoolers and older children would pay for immunization.
Senator Capehart says most Senate Republicans will back President Eisenhower in actions toward China and Formosa. He notes opposition from Senator Jenner who urged a nonparticipation resolution to block any conference risking territory transfer to a Communist state.
Maryland Governor Theodore R. McKeldin said he has a hunch President Eisenhower will seek re election in 1956. He added Lord help us if he doesn't run during remarks at Princeton New Jersey last night.
In Las Vegas Val Peterson of the Federal Civil Defense Administration said more than a fourth of 1300 workers at the big atomic test area have left. Morale remains high among those still on site despite three postponements as a weather briefing decides if a 40 kiloton shot from a 500 foot tower can be scheduled tomorrow.

Chancellor Adenauer and French Foreign Minister Pinay met in Bonn to work out details of the Saar pact. A failure to agree could delay West German rearmament. Police were reinforced in Bonn to curb demonstrations as the pact remains tied to sovereignty, occupation ending, and NATO rearming timelines.
In Tallahassee the House Constitutional Amendments Committee approved a measure to grant Florida cities greater control over local affairs. The amendment aims to reduce the number of local bills the legislature must handle each session.
An administrator-backed measure to abolish county fee systems will be introduced in the House. The bill would set county law officers on fixed salaries rather than pay tied to arrests.
