The 41 day old L&N strike spreads as three more lines curtail passenger and freight service in Birmingham Alabama. Picket lines form at the Illinois Central Frisco and Central of Georgia yards while nonstriking L&N crews move freight. The National Mediation Board plans new talks with rail and union officials as governors meet on the dispute involving about 25 000 workers.
An Albuquerque mother told school officials her child did not need the Salk anti polio vaccine because she believed they have polio insurance. The comment reflects skepticism of vaccination amid public health efforts.
At the ASNE meeting in Washington Lee Hills of the Detroit Free Press and Miami Herald told about 400 editors that comic strips have declined some but remain highly popular. He predicted comics and other entertainment features will stay an important part of newspapers despite competition from television and films.

Violent spring storms swept the midecontinent with thunderstorms and rain after severe activity in the South. In southeast Missouri a small tornado damaged buildings, uprooted trees, and knocked out power lines and telephone wires. Damage was estimated at 500000 to 800000 dollars, centered near Sikeston and Lutesville, with no serious injuries reported. The system moved into Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois and Tennessee.
Residents in time zones observing daylight saving time are urged to move clocks forward one hour tonight. When 2 a.m. standard time arrives tomorrow, the fast time officially becomes 3 a.m.
Investors must now post at least 70 percent cash to buy stocks as the Federal Reserve Board increased margin requirements from 60 percent. It is the second hike in four months following a January rise from 50 to 60 percent. The move came after markets closed for the weekend with early Wall Street expectations of a potential dip on reopening. One observer said the increase is not large enough to alter the market's overall course.

Sewell Avery won the contest for control of Montgomery Ward and Co. as election inspectors began counting yesterday's stockholders meeting ballots in Chicago. The final tally will take about three weeks, with Wolfson's strength measured by supporters at forthcoming director meetings.

Dr Jonas E Salk and family were feted by President Eisenhower in the White House as he thanked the nation for his polio vaccine. Stenographers watched, aides observed, and Sherman Adams chatted with the Salk children in the lobby. In the rose garden Salk stood with Eisenhower and Secretary Hobby.
Florida Senate approves two bills tightening gun controls. One bans felons without restored civil rights from possessing pistols rifles or sawed off shotguns over 22 caliber. The other requires formal pistol purchase applications.
At the Asian African conference in Bandung Premier Chou En-lai offered to negotiate with the United States to ease tensions in the Far East including Formosa. He stated China is friendly and willing to sit down to discuss relaxing tensions, while Pakistan's Premier Mohammed Ali welcomed the move as a step toward reducing world tension.
A Sarasota area report notes Minnie from Flagg Marine Service on assignment, but a NEWS spy says she is scraping paint off her 10-foot craft at the boathouse. Early fog in the area clears to fair, with southerly winds and scattered showers forecast along the East Gulf.
