Formosa officials say the idea of Chiang Kai-shek giving up Quemoy and Matsu is absurd and impossible. They deny any US suggestion to yield the offshore islands to the Communists and note concern over a visit by Walter Robertson and Admiral Radford. Chiang was informed two days before the announcement.
Albany. Gov Averell Harriman revived the State Committee on Refugees and named Edward Corsi as one of its 17 members. Corsi had been fired April 10 by Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, a fellow Republican, as a refugee consultant and condemned the action as shabby and un Christian.
A 34 year old Portland attorney Kermit Smith was killed when a bomb exploded as he started his car in the parking lot of the Columbia Edgewater Golf Club near Portland. Police found wires suggesting the device was attached to the car battery.
A 25 foot Navy recreation fishing boat exploded and burned ten miles south of Key West injuring three people. Lt. W. C. Kistler his wife Eileen and Dave Pollock of Pensacola were hurt and are listed in stable condition.
Governor LeRoy Collins said he supported reasonable settlement of the Louisville and Nashville railroad strike but saw no Florida justification to call in the National Guard. He cited legislative duties and said he would participate in or send a representative to any second governor's conference.
Sperry Gyroscope Co asks a court to enjoin mass picketing and violence at its Lake Success Long Island plant where the strike halted all electronics production. Two days of clashes left one man dead from a heart attack and several injured as CIO workers and nonstrikers clashed.
At Bandung Indonesia a nine nation subcommittee deadlocked over a proposed Iran led resolution condemning colonialism in any form. Chou En Lai opposed wording that could attack communism with India backing him, delaying a stance on colonialism while debates continue.
Chicago report: head joined Andrews twins Deborah Marie and Christine Mary were separated in a 4 and a half hour operation led by Dr. Harold Voris with a team of 14 surgeons. Surgeons are guardedly optimistic both will survive as conditions remain good.
Maurice B. Resh chief auditor for the city and his wife with four children won Sarasota’s local All Florida Family Contest. The Jaycees sponsored locally and Florida Speaks and Sunrise magazine statewide chose a family that typifies Florida. They advance to Miami for a prize trip and home construction option, staying at Isle of Capri Hotel on an all expenses paid weekend.
In Chicago at the Medinah Temple Avery the chairman faced Louis Wolfson as the stockholders gathered for Montgomery Ward and Co. annual meeting. Wolfson seeks to take control of the flagship mail order firm while Avery presides over the proceedings before a 6200 seat audience.
County Health Officer Dr. W L Wright reports 1300 first and second graders received the first dose of the Salk polio vaccine in two days. The second dose will be given in two to three weeks as part of the vaccination drive.
The Associated Press reports no progress in settling three major strikes the Louisville and Nashville Railroad walkout affecting about 25 000 workers the Southern Bell Telephone stoppage hitting roughly 50 000 employees and a CIO textile walkout involving 23 000 workers across 24 mills in four New England states. Violent clashes accompanied both rail and telephone walkouts. in Birmingham Alabama picketing extended to Seaboard Railroad with two eastbound trains canceled. A health and welfare plan dispute fueled the CIO textile walkout involving 24 mills. Concurrently 3000 limestone belt unionists quit at 24 Bedford Bloomington ind companies over a new contract.

The West accepted the Kremlin proposal for a foreign ministers conference to finish the deadlocked treaty, with ambassadors doing initial work.
