No Courts and Santa Fe Ring Tactics In Territorial Finance

The Sun analyzes the no courts debate and probes the salary fund surplus in the territory’s general funds. It argues the salary fund benefits from clerks fees and an 11,000 surplus provision, warns of Santa Fe ring manipulation, and calls for an educated legislature to overhaul funding and avert future deficits. The piece also notes city actions including sidewalk notices for J B Lamy and Emeline Carter, a 25 year Santa Fe Electric franchise, a new street from the Presbyterian church to the depot, and rubbish removal funding near Alderman Garcia’s residence.

Open Letter to The Sun from San Pedro criticizes Mayo

An open letter from San Pedro, New Mexico, dated November 23, 1881, rebutts County Commissioner Mayo’s editorial. The writer accuses Mayo of misrepresenting influence over local actions, defends a community vote censuring Mayo, and questions Mayo’s honesty about a mining road scheme and payments. The letter ridicules Mayo’s claims and urges local businessmen to judge Mayo’s sincerity after a brief discussion.
