Pueblo Indian School Question Divides Interior Affairs
The 1891 communication from the Indian Affairs office discusses the impact of the 1881 1882 act paragraph authorizing rules to compel attendance of Indian children at government schools. It reviews Pueblo status in New Mexico, cites U.S. Supreme Court opinions on Pueblo citizenship and land, and concludes the paragraph does not apply to Pueblo Indians of New Mexico and cannot enforce attendance at their schools.
