In Leadville Colorado on September 28 miner Nathan Wheaton died after an explosion in the blacksmith shop. His coat pocket held sticks of giant powder that detonated when struck by a hammer, tearing a large wound through his chest as onlookers found him.
Yellow fever reports from Jacksonville show nineteen new cases and one death by noon. Memphis and other towns ease quarantine as travel resumes. Jacksonville notes 131 cases with eight deaths, widespread distress, and looming refugee feeding needs. new cases reach Gainsville and Sanderson nearby with additional fever cases.
The William R Foster Jr mortgage fraud case expands with rumors of a second bogus mortgage. Trustee Orr suspects an $8,000 mortgage is fake, boosting total stealings to around $176,000. Foster may be in Canada as family members plan to cover losses. Each member faces about $12,000 loss. Foster’s high income and $1,000,000 inheritance noted.
At the Republican county committee headquarters in San Francisco a protest over district returns led to gunfire. W J Harrington produced a revolver and abused Fire Commissioner Martin J Kelly before an unknown shooter fired from the rear. David Donahue died from a heart wound and A Christianson was fatally wounded. Kelly and Harrington were shot but survived.
Information from Dougherty Texas reports Governor Guy led armed men into Tishomingo Chickasaw capital yesterday and took his seat. Byrd party had counted Guy out and Byrd assumed governorship, but Guy returned with supporters and reclaimed the capital.
Rumors circulate that a sudden change in the governorship will trigger heightened alert. As soon as the Byrd men learn of the transition, hot times are expected and government troops may be kept in reserve for an emergency.
Pueblo Colorado September 28 The Yardmaster of the Denver Rio Grande road has been arrested for obstructing a crossing. Between 6 pm and 8 am last night 600 loaded cars and 300 empties were handled by switchmen in the yard. During the day they moved 1700 cars and the 24 hour record was 7766. All yards and sidings six miles out of town are crowded with cars as proof of the roads prosperity.
Washington reports freezing weather with a killing frost in southern Michigan and Wisconsin and light frost in Minnesota and Missouri. Forecasters indicate a severe frost may hit the Ohio Valley tomorrow, with lighter frost in exposed Gulf states, Tennessee, parts of the Carolinas, Virginia, the middle Atlantic, and New England interior.
In Chicago on September 28, Mrs Lena Schremer admitted guilt to murder for pouring kerosene on her drunken husband and setting him afire. With the infant on her knee she heard Judge Tuthill sentence her to ten years in the penitentiary, noting the brutal nature of the crime.
Wheat opened higher in New York on September 28 in strong active trading, led by covering contracts in step with Chicago. In Chicago at noon no September wheat transactions were reported since the last update, while train loads from St Louis Detroit Milwaukee and other cities were speeding toward the city on express time.
In Need. Washington, Sept. 28. Gen. Joseph Wheeler today received dispatches from the mayor of Decatur reporting the town in a distressed condition and greatly in need of food, money and contributions. Upon receipt of the dispatch General Wheeler forwarded 6,000 rations to Decatur.
Chicago September 28 fire at Wilkins & Co on Lake street destroyed the finer furniture factory. Two bodies recovered, three more believed trapped. Stock loss estimated at 60000 dollars.
Senor Florence Luiz, a wealthy Sonoran ranchman and a renowned Indian scout for both U S and Mexican forces for twenty five years, died by his own hand by shooting at San Lorenzo in Nogales on September 28.
Detroit Sept 28 S W Brown was sentenced to four years and six months in the penitentiary for bigamy. Seven of the 33 women he allegedly married testified against him in court.
Fort Worth Texas September 28 fire swept the Shannis Moss collar factory and jute bagging works owned by a stock company and Ketchum and Barton's carriage and wagon factory. Loss estimated at 50000 with 4500 insured. The blaze caused extensive damage to multiple works including the two factories.
Boston reports on September 28 that pugilist Sullivan is out of danger, according to his physicians.
A dispatch from Colonel Clendenning dated Fort Ringgold reports he protected Sebree and others from the mob at Rio Grande City. He says no property was destroyed, affairs are not as bad as claimed, troops would have been used if real danger existed, and posse reinforcements from neighboring counties arrived to restore quiet.
The collector of customs in Washington has been authorized to suspend action on twenty Mormon children held at New York until Mormon Society agents can prove they are not likely to become public charges.
