Hope tavern owner found guilty of beer sale to minor

Frank Murphy 58, owner of Murphy's Lounge in Hope, was found guilty in District Court of selling beer to two minors tied to a November fire at Southside School. The trial stemmed from an appeal of a Justice Court decision. sentencing set for September 21.

New Policeman For Sandpoint

Sandpoint Chief of Police George Elliot announced the appointment of Dale Munson as patrolman to replace Jack Sterne. Munson, 25, comes from Clark Fork, has law enforcement experience in Libby and a four year Air Force clerk assignment, and is a graduate of the Montana Law Enforcement Academy.

Smokers Drop as 10 Million Quit Since 1966

Dr Daniel Horn director of the National Clearinghouse for Smoking and Health told delegates at the National Conference on Smoking and Health that 10 million Americans have quit since 1966 based on a 5000 person sample. He noted the number of smokers fell from 49.4 million to 44.9 million while the population rose by about 7.5 million.

EWSC Enrolls Three From Sandpoint Area

Three Sandpoint area graduates Susan Hamilton Randy L James and Becky M Shields have been admitted to Eastern Washington State College for the fall quarter. Hamilton has not chosen a major Shields will study speech therapy and James will major in history. Fall classes begin September 23 with on campus residence opening September 20.

Lightning struck a Santa Cruz baseball game killing four high school students. The incident occurred about 40 miles southeast of Manila, according to the Philippine constabulary.

Spokane eight year old David Michael Willoughby has been missing since Labor Day after a noon hike west of Spokane toward Geiger Field. An organized search by UPI groups includes volunteers, sheriff's deputies, and police as daily checks continue with no trace found.

Two Accidents Investigated In Idaho Route 95 and Highway 200

Two Thursday accidents near Sandpoint involved Deanna Wilmies and Floyd Eveland on U S 95. A second crash on State Highway 200 west of Sandpoint damaged a car driven by Dorothy Grummond as a log truck sideswiped it. No injuries or citations were reported.

Grizzly pair caught in Yellowstone may head to zoo

A female grizzly and her year old cub trapped after a park attack are being moved to a zoo in Pocatello Idaho. Park officials say they cannot confirm the bears are the ones involved in last Friday’s mauling of two Pennsylvania campers at Grand Village Campground.

Sandpoint Liquor Store Reopens At New Old Location

Manager Earl Charlton says the Sandpoint liquor store is moving back to its former site in the IGA Market area. The new quarters are about 25 percent larger, expanding selection. After February 8 fire at IGA Market, the store operated temporarily on Fifth Avenue in the former Sandpoint Ice and Cold Storage building.
