Legion Auction On Wednesday

The Legion of Fine Arts plans an auction tomorrow evening at the Elks Lodge featuring about 40 works from artists in Sandpoint and across the country. Centerpiece is a still life by Robert Kensinger of Malaga Spain, with current bids at 150 and 200 dollars. Viewing starts 7:30 p.m. bidding at 8:30 p.m. Proceeds support the Legion and participating artists receive half. Dustyne Hope and Kimm Byers donated works to be drawn at the event.

Merit System and Pay Raises Considered for Bonner County

The Bonner County Board of County Commissioners approved proposing a merit system for the Sheriff’s Office. Commissioner Harold Anselmo said the plan followed a Twin Falls seminar by the Idaho Sheriff’s Association and includes a personnel administrator appointed to study the system. Pay raises for all county employees may be tied to the merit plan and would start after year’s end, with next year’s budget outlining provisions. Benefits under consideration include job classification, tenure security, internal promotions, and a board from other sheriffs’ departments to hear appeals.

Oregon Bans Snake Dams on Middle Snake River

Oregon state action blocks dam construction on a 71 mile Middle Snake River reach through Hells Canyon. The State Water Resources Board, by 42 votes, declares the river should stay free flowing for recreation and limited agricultural use, challenging Northwest power firms and pending federal approval.

Preliminary hearing set for Schroder in Idaho case

Magistrate Alan Schwartzman scheduled a 9 a.m. November 27 preliminary hearing on three counts of obtaining money under false pretenses and seven counts of attempting to obtain money under false pretenses against former Idaho Highway Beautification Project director Jerry Wayne Schroder. Schroder, Boise, represented by Paul J. Buser, said he was working in Olympia Washington and sought late November or early December trial dates after unemployment compensation denial in Idaho. He was released on his own recognizance after a Monday magistrate appearance.

Seniors Receive 13500 for New Bonner Center

Bonner County commissioners presented a 13500 revenue sharing check to Bonner County senior citizens who had been displaced from a center. About 50 attendees voted to pursue the city’s prior Main Street site as the construction plan proceeds with private labor and city land donations supporting the project.

Amtrak service eyed for Idaho via major city routes

Idaho Citizens Advisory Committee on Amtrak met with Amtrak officials in Washington to discuss restoring passenger service. If approved the route would be scheduled for major cities on both sides of Boise with connections to Ogden and Portland or Seattle, or Denver and Seattle.
