Timber pinch looms as US faces rising prices and slower growth
A Forest Service study warns the United States will see severe timber supply limits and steep price rises over the next decades. If productivity remains at 1970 levels, softwood lumber and plywood could jump 20 to 25 percent by 1980 and 50 to 60 percent by 2000. The report calls for combined public and private investment, including tree planting and better forest management, to raise harvests by 2020. It also notes environmental protections and recreation pressures could further curb supply.
