Roving Ports Of Entry To Be Reactivated

Boise Idaho's roving ports of entry program, cut in 1967 by Gov Don W Samuelson, will reopen October 15 with 75000 federal funds. Highway Dept officials plan 13 new weighmasters to staff permanent weight stations and free veterans to operate roving ports. The program, funded through the Public Employment Act, aims to reduce road damage and create jobs.

Senate Rejects Gravel Bombing Ban Amid Indochina War Debate

The Senate voted 64 to 19 against Sen. Gravel's amendment to bar further bombing in Indochina except to protect U S troops. Gravel likened nightly air strikes to Nazi crimes, while supporters argued the move would jeopardize remaining U S forces.

Meany Links Nixon to Peron Over Pay Freeze

AFL CIO president George Meany compared President Nixon to Argentina’s Juan Peron for canceling union pay and benefit rises during the 90 day wage price freeze. He argued labor rejected Nixon power to nullify collective bargaining terms and vowed to resist limits on the right to strike. Meany spoke after addressing AFL-CIO Industrial Union Department, while a Senate challenge loomed over overriding the federal pay delay order.

Montana driver cited after car off SH 200 crash

Joel G. Ballenger 24 of Heron was cited for driving without an operator's permit and being drunk in public after his single vehicle left SH 200 near Trestle Creek Road. He escaped injury. Meanwhile Kalispell man Glenn Shirley, 35, died after being electrocuted on a Northern Lights transformer job in Selle area. Dale Barton of Sandpoint assisted. Shirley and Barton were with Harp Line Construction Co under contract to Northern Lights Inc. Deputies responded as ambulance troubles delayed care and resuscitation.

Infant Death Autopsy Expected In Broadus Case

Autopsy results into the death of a 5 week old Broadus infant left in a ditch by its mother were expected. The mother guided officers to the culvert last Thursday where she had placed the child after a Tuesday auto mishap. She stated the infant was thrown forward in her car when she braked to avoid a rabbit. During the weekend Mrs. Jones voluntarily entered Warm Springs State Mental Hospital for psychiatric help.

Five File For Council Seats In City Election

City Clerk Ken Hackworth reports five candidates filed for three four year council seats in the November 2 election. Three incumbents George Harper Bertram Lines and Robert Kalb seek re election while Hazel Lamoreaux and Edna Spearman join the race. Balloting runs noon to 8 pm at City Hall Fire House with October 4 as final filing day.
