U S Transport Dept waives welding fixes for Alaska pipeline

The Transportation Dept ruled not to force fixes on three welding defects at the Koyukuk River crossing and declined waivers for repairing 31 other welds. Deputy Secretary Barnum said repairs would cause environmental damage and that most welds were acceptable or already examined, with 34 of 612 pending welds already repaired.

Sandpoint Hit and Run Damages Betzy Benson Car

A hit and run in Sandpoint damaged Betty Benson’s parked vehicle by about 300 dollars in the 200 block of Lake Street. No injuries were reported in a separate accident Wednesday on Highway 200 and Washington Avenue in Oldtown. Ella Marie Murphy of Newport, driving east on Highway 200, failed to yield while turning onto Washington Avenue, colliding with Daniel Lee Konbright of Usk. Each car suffered about 500 dollars in damage.

Dog Pound Disinfection Keeps Canines Safe After outcry

After Mayor Ed Eitzman ordered immunizations for all Sandpoint dogs, no new deaths have been reported at the pound. Of 45 dogs seized November 1 from Laura Wilson’s residence, 31 died from disease. now, remaining dogs receive vaccines and anti bacterial baths as lime and deep sand treatment continues under Poundmaster Tom DeMers. A county worker and tractor support weeklong measures aim to finish by week’s end.

Burglaries Reported in Priest Lake and Sandpoint

Burglars stole a chainsaw and an antique rocking chair from Hila Moe’s Priest Lake cabin during the weekend worth about 400 dollars. Unknown intruders also broke a rear window at Glenda Laird’s Hobby Store on North First Avenue between 9:30 p.m. Wednesday and 9:35 a.m. Friday. a metal screen blocked entry.

Pilot Found Dead After Youth Leads Rescue Team to Wreckage

Civil Air Patrol and Idaho authorities found the Piper wreckage on Greenhorn Mountain near Sandpoint three miles northwest after a 16 year old guided rescuers. Pilot Steven C. Warner 30, from Olympia was killed. A three and a half day search involved CAP volunteers from Boise and Walla Walla with NTSB investigators en route.

Officers Begin Search For Missing Hunters In Spokane

No Permit Needed For Christmas Tree Cutters

In northern Idaho Panhandle National Forests residents may cut their own trees this year without permits but with limits of one tree per family and no more than two per carload. In eastern Washington Colville National Forest trees cost $1 with a permit from the Spokane US Forest Service.
