New Traffic Safety Committee Formed

City Council moved swiftly to create a new Traffic Safety Committee by suspending rules and amending the city ordinance. Mayor Floyd Gray cited inactivity of the old panel and proposed immediate personnel changes including George Elliot, Les Brown, Jim Baugh, Web Overholzer, and Jack Lechner for six-year terms.

Blackfoot Man Sentenced for Manslaughter

Blackfoot resident Vincent Miera was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter in the death of Mabel Lopez. He was sentenced Monday by Seventh District Court Judge Arnold Beebe to not more than 10 years in the state prison and remanded to Bingham County sheriff custody. Lopez died after being shot on June 1 with her death occurring June 22.

Housewife Charges City with Water Meter Discrimination

Mrs. Lana Brown told Sandpoint City Council that water metering creates inequity as she pays up to 27 dollars while most homeowners pay a flat eight dollar monthly rate. She argued absence of notice and called for study as meters already operate in 77 homes. A Public Works Committee meeting was set to review the meter-no meter issue.

Sandpoint Man Cited For Improper Turn After Crash

Gower L. Hansen, 67, cited for improper turning after a two car head on collision on the Pine Street loop road at Cemetery Road. Irene L. Sundquist, 32, and her son Chris, 10, sustained minor injuries. Hansen’s car totaled. Sundquist vehicle damaged about 400 dollars.

Chinese Big On $100 Bills At United Nations Visit

A Peking advance group member to the United Nations offered a $100 bill to a stewardess to cover a $2.50 earphone fee. The stewardess could not change it, no charge was applied. Later at the Hotel Roosevelt coffee shop the group leader paid a bill with a $100 note and received change. The cashier and waitress noted a good tip.

Man Convicted on Lesser Charge After Murder Trial

Fred R. Williams Jr. a 40 year old Sandpoint contractor died at Kootenai Memorial Hospital two weeks after a head on collision at SH 200 and Kootenai Cutoff. He is survived by his wife Donna, six children, and his parents.
