Sandpoint Mayor Les Brown criticized the city council for closing the beach drive-through for a year despite opposition from the Lions Club seniors and residents. He cites petitions and public calls claiming the move was a mistake and says the beach belongs to the people.
The Idaho Fish and Game Department approved a conditional grant of 300 gallons per minute from a Sandpoint spring to the Southside Sewer and Water District and granted an easement for cross-property sewage hookups. The decision awaits legal counsel advice. The commission also closed chinook salmon fishing, approved a chukar hunt in parts of the Salmon River drainage, and authorized a $35,000 contribution to the USFWS for predator control.
Voters in Trustee Zone 5 will choose a Bonner County School Board Trustee this Tuesday May 20. Polls from 12 noon to 8 p.m. are at Blanchard Grange Hall Edgemere Grange Hall and Granite Idaho Hill Sagle and Southside school houses. Candidates are V A Verhei and Robert Klatt.
Strong winds toppled trees and cut power across the county with gusts up to 41 mph at Sandpoint Municipal. Pacific Power and Light and Northern Lights crews restored most services by 8 p m to 11 p m. Five lines were knocked out at the Yak substation while General Telephone reported five residents out in Sandpoint and additional outages in Bonners Ferry and Newport.
Idaho Democratic headquarters executive secretary Pat Gillespie said Mel Morgan of Pocatello intends to resign as state party treasurer. She noted Morgan told her last week he would resign after his criminal trial, but no formal notice had been received yet.
District Judge Dar Cogswell signed a motion to dismiss a writ requiring Sheriff Wilcox to stop alleged improper storage of controlled substances. The case grew from a May petition by John V. Strode alleging negligence after photos showed an open courthouse basement area. investigators later found the area under the district court clerk.
Idaho state fish and game commissioners meet in Sandpoint for a two day session with a public hearing tonight at 7 30 pm at Sandpoint Junior High School to gather citizen input.
