Control of Permits Essential in Idaho Water Clean-Up

Boise officials say issuing pollution discharge permits is essential for Idaho to maintain control of its water cleanup programs. Al Eiguren of the Department of Environmental and Community Services says the agency has reapplied to the EPA for permission to issue water discharge permits. New federal law requires permits for cities, businesses and industries discharging effluents. EPA may delegate permit authority to Idaho or retain control of the program. Idaho ran its own permit system until last October when amendments created a national permit system.
