Fire destroys Sandpoint judo school in suspected arson
Nineteen men using two fire units fought a four hour blaze at Sandpoint's Forest and Cedar Streets judo school. The building was gutted and declared a total loss. Fire Chief Wade Brown suspects arson as the blaze began in the basement around 3 53 a m. occupants Robin and William Trussell escaped unharmed.

Athol man charged with kidnap and assault in Spirit Lake
An Athol man was charged with second degree kidnapping and assault with intent to commit rape and is jailed in Kootenai County on seven thousand five hundred dollars bond. The incident occurred in a moving car between Rathdrum and Spirit Lake after an 18 year old Libby Montana woman and her 22 year old male companion picked up a hitchhiker. The hitchhiker allegedly pulled a knife and attempted to rape the woman as the party traveled from Sandpoint toward Spokane. The couple fought back and pushed the man from the car when the driver braked.
