Supreme Court Hearing Granted To Communists

The Supreme Court will hear arguments next fall or winter on whether Gus Hall and other would be independent candidates were improperly barred from the California ballot in 1972. Hall and Jarvis Tyner of the American Communist Party sought to run for president and vice president, while Marin County attorney Thomas Storer challenged a Democratic ballot exclusion. The case centers on California rules requiring 5 percent petition signatures with limits on primary voters and the court’s prior ruling that the state’s approach discouraged a laundry list ballot. The NOAA weather note records the nation’s coldest reading outside Alaska and Hawaii at Evanston Wyoming, 6 degrees.
