The Boston Globe published classified Defense Department materials and refused a Justice Department demand to stop. At 1:40 p.m. EDT the government sought a temporary restraining order in U.S. District Court to halt further releases. Freight Man Killed on Burlington Northern Bridge near Newport
Kalispel Indian Pete Bigsmoke, 61, was killed instantly Monday night at the Albeni Cove bridge between Newport, Washington and Priest River when struck by a Burlington Northern freight train. Train operator R. L. Leyde said the train, traveling about 40 mph, struck the man who sat on the bridge. emergency brakes were applied but could not avert the fatal impact. The body traveled 48 feet before stopping. Survived by sister Hazel Hunter of the Kalispel Reservation. Body sent to Sherman's Funeral Home in Newport.
