Idaho newspaper urges return to direct primary system

A weekly Idaho editor urges restoring the direct primary after criticizing the pre primary convention system and the Idaho GOP for blocking Marsing teacher Edward Whittaker from the Aug 4 primary ballot. Whittaker gathered 1 000 signatures and paid 299 dollars but received zero convention votes. Hawes argues delegates betrayed citizens by not placing Whittaker on the ballot and calls for ballots reflecting all qualified electors' choices. He notes Owyhee County's convention votes for Samuelson despite Smith’s petition. The editorial laments big money in politics and urges citizen control of government.
