Passenger Train Collides With Freight Near Newport

Burlington Northern's westbound Empire Builder struck a freight train on a siding near Newport Washington injuring about 45 people. The streamliner carrying 211 passengers and 12 crew was moving 35 mph and braked when the siding switch was thrown. None of the engines or coaches overturned but three passenger cars derailed.

Increasing clouds with showers chance through today

The forecast calls for rising high cloudiness today becoming mostly cloudy tonight and Tuesday with a 10 percent shower chance today 30 percent tonight and 50 percent Tuesday. Highs near 75 today and 70 Tuesday with lows around 55 tonight.

Jim Meneely a 31 year old Ar row Tie Company employee was trapped in a seven foot deep roadside pit when road crust collapsed. His friend Ronnie Kohal rescued him and he was taken to Bonner County General Hospital in satisfactory condition.

New Magistrates Appointed in Idaho First District

District Judge James G. Towles announced the First Judicial District appointed five new magistrates for Idaho's northern counties. Sam M. Irvine Ralph J. Mills Lennis McLeod Craig Kosonen Margaret Burns and Virginia Balser take effect January 11 1971 with training in Boise later this year.

Car Struck By Freight At Cocolalla Crossing

C L Cato of Granite was hurt when a Burlington Northern train struck his car near the Lake Cocolalla crossing south of Valley Vista farm at about 3 p m Sunday. He and his wife suffered minor injuries, and Cato said he did not hear warning signals and did not see the train until it was upon them.

Lake Pend Oreille Waterways Group considers docks and buoys

The Lake Pend Oreille Waterways Committee met Friday to discuss building new docking facilities at several Lake Pend Oreille sites and placing buoys for water safety. They approved repairs at the East Beach ramp with an estimated $140 cost and planned long range Sand Point Basin development.
