High Kite Pioneer Reaches 23000 Feet In Opelousas

Retired Hughes Aircraft engineer Joe Iannone flies a seven by 45 foot homemade kite on a string over his Opelousas home. He has sent it aloft to 23000 feet with 25 auxiliary red kites to prevent drag and uses lightweight trash bag material. He believes a 50 kite capability could be achieved with machinery. The wind must be 12 to 15 mph for lift. Iannone’s giant kite is anchored to a fence and can be seen only with binoculars when above 43000 feet.
