Override Levy Defeated in Bonner County Vote

Less than ten percent of eligible voters cast ballots as Bonner County voters rejected the 200,000 deficit levy for School District 82. Of 1,694 votes, 1,053 opposed the levy and 627 supported it. one ballot was marked both yes and no. Superintendent Dr Wayne Likens cancelled Friday’s canvass meeting. BCEA President John Wylie had advocated the levy to fund higher teacher salaries.

Beach Barbecue Weekend Showcases Arts Air Show And More

The Sandpoint Lions Club hosts a Sunday beach barbecue at City Beach with 900 pounds of beef, sky diving displays, a band, water events and horseshoe contests. The Bonner County Arts and Crafts Festival runs July 25–26 at City Beach with ragtime pianist Evy Knoke and a watermelon booth by Beta Sigma Phi. A Crazy Day Sale and Pend Oreille Flyers air show feature breakfast at 7 am and an airfield admission of 2 dollars with aerobatics and rides.

Slicing Plant Proposers Seek Cedapine Veneer at Samuels Site

Samuels location near Post Falls attracts Idaho Veneer Company founder Leonard Malloy and his brother as they pursue a conditional use permit for a veneer slicing plant and small sawmill at Samuels. They foresee 25 steady local hires and up to 45 with future expansion, with rail service from Burlington Northern and an environmental review completed. Opposition from County Commissioner Henry Samuels favors closer, better zoned sites.

Voters Urged to Register for Bonner County Primary

County Clerk Doris Kenney reminds Bonner County electors that to vote in the August 3 primary they must be U.S. citizens at least 18 and residents of the county. Those who have voted in any primary or general election since 1972 do not re register. Registration with precinct registrars runs until July 23 and then at the clerk’s courthouse. Deadline is 8 p.m. July 28. Absentee ballots are available. office hours include Saturday July 31 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Absentee voting ends 5 p.m. August 2.

Priest River City Council discussed proposed sewer extension for Railroad Avenue. Glen Edgar plans a rental septic system due to delays, citing river contamination and lost rent. Health district permits may be granted if standards are met. easement delays persist with Burlington Northern.

Candidates Forum Set for Tomorrow at Sandpoint Hall

The Daily Bee sponsored Meet The Candidates forum runs tomorrow at 7 30 pm in Sandpoint Community Hall. Eleven candidates vie for District 1 and 3 county commissioner seats, with prior sheriff candidates numbering five. Moderator Steve Klatt will guide introductions questions and audience queries ending by 9 30 pm.

Tailgate Days bring local producers to Bonner County Fairgrounds

The Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce sponsors Tailgate Days to promote local buying and selling of area grown produce crafts and goods. From 10 am to 4 pm on July 31 August 7 and August 21 there are no commercial sales or entry fees with buyers and sellers handling all transactions directly.

Sandpoint Dog Control Reminds of Pickup List and Leash Rules

Sandpoint pet control officer Tom DeMers says a posted list will show dogs picked up in the city for three days. Unclaimed dogs are disposed of humanely after the period. Leash or confinement is required within city limits and City Beach is off-limits. Tags aid identification and return.
