Boxing coach Karl Berg dies after car crash near Hayden Lake
Sandpoint boxing coach Karl Rudolph Berg, 72, died Friday at Kootenai Memorial Hospital from chest injuries after his Volkswagen was broadside by a car driven by 77 year old Alice Sweat at Rimrock Road. Berg’s wife Flossie sustained a broken arm. Sweat faces charges including failure to stop. Berg, born 1905 in Germany, had a long boxing and business career in the Sandpoint area. Funeral services set for July 20 in Sandpoint.

Fire Fighters Battle Weekend Blazes Across Dover and Nearby Areas
Westside firefighters stopped a garage fire from spreading to three houses in Dover Saturday night. The blaze, likely caused by welding in Don Blackmore's shop, destroyed a garage workshop and $5 500 to $6 000 worth of tools. Westside volunteers and a Public Lands crew fought an earlier 600 square foot grass and brush fire above the Dover Mill. Separate incidents included a trailer house fire north of Granite Hill and a grass blaze near U.S. 95.

Americans Return Home From North Korea Helicopter Incident

Bonner County senior division 4 H horse judging team won first place at the state meet in Burley, scoring 1 700 points and earning a trip to Albuquerque August 6. Team members Laurie Tibbs Kim Lewis Barbara Tibbs and Janice Woods led a dominant finish over 40 teams. Laurie Tibbs also won senior individual honors with Lewis second. Funds needed to cover about 800 more dollars for travel with local groups asked to donate via the Extension Office or the Love and Tibbs households.

Ridley Cited After Car Skids Off Sagle Road
Kirk D. Ridley 21 of Sandpoint was cited for failing to report an accident after his car skidded off Sagle road about 1 a.m. Sunday three miles east of U.S. 95. Deputies say the vehicle swerved, skidded over gravel, crossed the pavement, struck a dirt bank, with $500 damage and no injuries.

Two Spokane Women Injured In U S 2 Collision
At about 11 30 p m Saturday two Spokane women were hurt when a car driven by Lorana J Pugh 27 struck a stopped vehicle driven by James L Ward 48 Newport sending his car into oncoming traffic and forcing a third vehicle off the road. The Pughs sustained cuts and bruises and were taken to Newport Hospital by Priest River ambulance. Damages were estimated at 1500 dollars to Pugh s car and 900 dollars to Ward s vehicle.
