The Laclede school bus now makes a one hour fifteen minute detour twice daily via Sandpoint and Dufort Road to transport about 50 students to Priest River High School. A by pass road, limited to light vehicles, is pending approval while a ferry alternative was deemed impractical. Parents favored continuing the bus route until the by pass is ready.

Water drawdown effects on Pend Oreille kokanee harvests
Lake Pend Oreille faced major water drawdowns after November 15 causing sharp declines in kokanee harvests five years later including 1969. In 1964 a nearly 5.5 foot drawdown followed the same date. Last fall kokanee harvest totaled 494 337, about half the 1953 1968 average. Commercial harvest fell to 62 000 fish, 17 percent of its average. Five year life cycles link spawning conditions to creel results, underscoring the need to study five-year pre-spawn conditions.
